In the Chicago land area, many Chicago homes are bungalows; those homes are perfect for Spacepak. Take some two and three story Beverley homes on Long wood drive,  or the historic homes on the north side and north shore.  The Spacepak systems installations always require some construction or maybe two systems at best.

These systems work well and are pretty quiet.  Out of 100 or so Spacepak systems we installed dating back 15 years only one motor has failed. And only a few Spacepak duct-works opened up losing air flow. Those were both easy fixes. Cost associated with these fixes was comparable to any HVAC repair.

Like any mechanical equipment maintenance is required. If the consumers of Spacepak air conditioning systems choose not to perform these maintenance’s, then surely the Spacepak systems will fail sooner then later. Storm Damaged central ac and today’s forecast for 6-12-2013, the weather forecasters are warning us of heavy rain storms with lightning and thunder. Your central a/c may be at risk.

Freon leak alternatives seem to be the question of the day for many home owners. Freon leaks especially R-22 HCFC refrigerants are a bigger issue then having no cool air in your home.

Freon leaks, why does this happen to my air conditioning system? Good question, Freon leaks can occur by friction of copper and aluminum, or copper and metal rubbing together.
During normal operation of an air conditioning system Freon is pumped through the copper piping. This occurs when the compressor is running and this creates a slight vibration.

Another source of vibration that can cause pinhole Freon leaks is when the blower motor of the furnace or air handler is running. Any time metal on metal vibrates to one another the odds of metal fatigue is greater.

Other sources of Freon leaks occurring are a faulty brazes or in Chicago where pressure relief valves were mandatory on the older central air conditioning systems and the valve pops off releasing Freon to the atmosphere. The pressure relief valve pops of due to failure of the valve or because of super high head pressure. Super high head pressure can be caused by a dirty and clogged condenser (outside unit). Failing condenser fan motor can cause high head pressure. Clogged evaporator coil and or clogged furnace filter. These last 2 causes are unlikely but we have seen it.

Then of course extreme heat can cause pressure relief valves to pop off releasing refrigerant to the atmosphere. When the temperatures outdoors are in the 80’s or 90” at ground level, imagine what they are on high rise apartments and condos? The black roofs and the blaring sun changes the temperatures on the roofs by at least 10 to 15 degrees on any giving day. This heat variance causes high head pressures that can cause pressure relief valves to pop off losing Freon to the atmosphere.

Freon Leak Solutions

There are no simple solutions  because all solutions cost a good amount of money. But some freon leak alternatives and solutions are less expensive than others, for example; Injecting easy seal stop leak verses hunting down the leak and fixing it. Hunting down leaks can be costly and there is no guarantee. Easy seal stop leak is the way to go, especially for your older ac systems. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” is one of those oft-heard sayings during the summer in places where the air is humid. Another is, “It’s 90 degrees and the humidity is 90 per cent!” And where the weather is not humid, “It’s hot — but it’s a dry heat!”

How much truth is there to those?

To try to quantify what the air “feels like” in a single number, the apparent temperature, or heat index, has come to be widely implemented over the years. In the old days, there was what’s known as the temperature-humidity index, or THI, but that was largely abandoned, probably because its values weren’t very meaningful. Meanwhile, Canada uses the “humidex.”

All these things are ways to try to get around simply using the temperature and the dewpoint separately rather than combined, because not enough people are familiar enough with the use of dewpoint in the communication of how humid the air is.
