Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air? A Chicago Troubleshooting Guide

Nine times out of ten, a furnace blowing cold air is one of five problems — and two of them you can rule out yourself in the next five minutes, without tools and without a service call.

Check these two things first

• Thermostat fan set to ON — ON runs the blower continuously, so between heating cycles it circulates room-temperature air that feels cold coming out of a vent. Switch the fan to AUTO and see if the “cold air” disappears.
• A clogged filter — when airflow drops, the furnace overheats and a safety switch shuts the burners off while the blower keeps running to cool things down. Result: cold air from every vent. Put in a fresh filter and give the furnace ten minutes.

The failures that need a technician

• Ignition problems — a weak igniter or dirty flame sensor means the burners never light, or light and drop out seconds later. The blower still runs; the air never warms up.
• Short-cycling on the limit switch — if the furnace heats briefly and then goes cold in a repeating pattern, it is overheating. That is an airflow or blower problem, and running it that way shortens the furnace’s life.
• Condensate and vent lockouts — high-efficiency furnaces shut themselves down when the condensate line or intake/exhaust vent is blocked. Common in Chicago after a hard freeze or drifting snow.
• Duct losses — if the air is warm at the furnace but cool at the far bedrooms, the heat is leaking out of the ductwork on the way, not failing to be made.

Why this always happens on the first cold night

A furnace that sat idle since April gets its first real workout the same week as every other furnace in the city.
